When Louis Vuitton opens its revamped store in SoHo in December, one notable part of the design will be the floor-to-ceiling installation by the Japanese artist Shuji Mukai.
The decision to commission the artwork made economic sense. Art is playing a larger role in stores, as retailers do whatever they can to make shopping in person fun, inspiring and worth the time. Even the new Sonos flagship store which opened in SoHo in July has artwork, from sketches by the London-based French illustrator Thibaud Herem to a custom illustration by the New York cartoonist Mark Alan Stamaty.
